The Garden – an ongoing project

so for the last few years I’ve been working diligently on creating a vegetable garden and went so far as to move to raised beds last year. Without any rain until this week it’s been odd to see the consistency of the soil with all of its amendment almost seem too light. I read a good article this past week about keeping the crops planted over the winter so that the topsoil doesn’t erode.

For topsoil I’ve been cautious because we have pretty acidic soil with a ton of pines and lots of moss due to some grea tree cover. So I used screened loam from the town and added in some bags of topsoil, a few bags of peat moss and regular amounts of compost.

I’ll use an organic weed killer and leave mulch to keep down on the weeds this year. Also with the raised beds I need to be careful about planting things too close. Last year I had 7′ tomato plants that just went nuts.

I’ll keep you posted. Peas, lettuce and kale went in a week ago.

In a recent post I spoke of early blight hitting the tomatoes…sucks.
